Subterranean Termites
Below is a video of live active termites taken by one of our technicians:
Subterranean termites vary in color by their role in the colony. Worker subterranean termites are cream colored and 1/8 to 3/8 of an inch. Reproductive subterranean termites, also called swarmers, have brown bodies as well as wings.
Subterranean termites live in underground colonies or in moist secluded areas aboveground. They build “mud tubes” to gain access to food sources and to protect themselves from open air. Like other termite species, subterranean termites feed on products containing cellulose. They swarm in the spring: groups of reproductive termites go off to start new colonies.
By far the most destructive species, subterranean termites can collapse a building entirely. A termite colony can contain up to 2 million members. Tennessee averages approximately 13 colonies of subterranean termites per acre of land.
